Hikers, hear us!

It is especially vital that you do not consume water from open water bodies such as rivers or lakes. Not because of the crocodiles. But even if the water looks clean, it may comprise bacteria and parasites, leaving you very ill. Travelers are advised to only consume bottled water while traveling to countries where there might be unsafe tap water. However, purchasing bottled water might not really be so eco-friendly and can sometimes be pricey. Also, do take note that some countries may sell repackaged tap water as bottled water, which is something to really look out for.

Fret not! We have some tips for your travels should you be worried about unsafe drinking water!

Tips for Safe Drinking Water:

1) Use Portable Water Filters

This could be a one-time investment, which could come as a water bottle or a separate filter. These Portable Water Filters help us to convert murky water from open water bodies into clean drinking water as it eradicates bacteria and contaminants. These are especially useful for travelers who spend a lot of time in nature or off road where clean water is generally harder to come by!

2) Leveraging Chemical Treatment methods

Use water purification tablets (iodine or chlorine tablets) to ensure tap water becomes safe for consumption. It takes approximately 20 minutes to an hour to completely dissolve, and these tablets can completely eradicate microorganisms to inhibit water-borne diseases.

3) Boiling your water

You can also treat tap water by boiling it for at least a minute to kill the pathogens and bacteria through pasteurization.

Using a combination of all 3 methods will ensure that you’re sufficiently hydrated with clean water always within arm’s reach.

Another side tip would be to consume sufficient fruits and vegetables (for example, cucumbers, celery, watermelon, berries, pineapples, lettuce, and bell peppers), as they are high in water content!

Remember the tips above, have a great trip and do not get eaten by crocodiles. Till the next time!
